BRINGING STAGE TO LIFE WORKSHOP IS COMING TO HOUSTON!!!

Gate Communications is partnering with Greater Houston Interpreters for the Deaf to host The Bringing the Stage to Life Extended Workshop Tour on March 9th & 10th, 2012. This is a performance interpreting workshop that will educate, entertain, and leave you begging for more. Whether you are a professional interpreter or just starting Sign Language classes this workshop has something to offer everyone. Certified interpreters, you can earn 1.25 PS CEU’s. Medical Interpreting Institute - Dr. Rachele St. John and Jay Mordai-Penual (April 14-15)

Introduction to Medical Interpreting
This workshop is designed to provide an overview of interpreting in the medical setting. Topics to be discussed include the role of health care professionals and interpreters as practice professionals and specialists in a variety of medical settings, and some of the ethical decision-making that comes into play in the healthcare environment.

Medical Terminology for Interpreters
This workshop is designed as an interactive experience for the interpreter working in the medical setting. Focus is on becoming more comfortable with common medical terminology, including Latin derivatives and body system vocabulary. Goal is to provide basic working understanding and comfort with medical terminology that aids the interpreter in providing effective communication and cultural mediation. Discussion will include addressing individual experiences from participants that they wish to share from their own medical encounters in interpreting, as well as steps for self-protection.

Ethics and Law in the Medical Setting
This workshop will provide an introduction of how the medical setting, the legal setting, and ethics intersect in the healthcare environment.  Areas of focus include emergent, inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic settings.

The Team Approach in the Medical Setting
This workshop is an interactive experience involving a novel approach to the interpreting dynamic in the medical setting. Case scenarios and ethical discussion allow for active participation during the workshop. This approach is a “Team Approach” in which the interpreter is a member of the medical team, with valued input to achieve linguistic and professional presence.

Debriefing and Social Construction of Knowledge
This discussion-based debriefing provides a social venue to reflect and process what participants learned during the workshops. Social construction of knowledge is a powerful learning process that is conducive to affecting change. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and provide feedback to the presenter and each other.

How an agency work? Should I be an educational interpreter? Will VRI allow me to work from home? There are many questions about the business of interpreting as well as a desire to improve the business aspects of one's job. This workshop focuses on the major industries of the Sign Language Interpreter's Market: Freelance interpreting both with an agency and or without, VRS, VRI, Educational in K-12 to post secondary and all the other job opportunities within the wonderful field.

We will also discuss interpreting voices, how to please your employer, perspective clients and/or how to make your company shine, how to do your job effectively, what can you do when you screw up, what certifications and other avenues that will maximize your professional resume, how to go about finding a job, and various other topics including plenty of time for questions and answers!

1. Identify the essential job requirements, duties and obligations of an interpreter within each of the following settings: VRS, VRU, Free lance Interpreting, Educational:k-12 and Educational: Post Secondary.

2. Describe the settings for each of the above mentioned specialties and explain the pros and cons of each in relation to the individual interpreter's personality and needs.

3. Explain the process by which an interpreter determines the rate of pay in each setting.

4. List the types of documents that will be needed when working as self-employed interpreter. 

5. Identify the options (sole proprietor, S Cor, LLC) formally establishing a business and describe the benefit of each. 

6. List the resources available that an interpreter can use to improve their personal interpreting skills.

Let Us Challenge Your Skills - LUCYS is GHID's new professional development division designed for working interpreters, both certified and pre-certified. Named in honor of one of our beloved charter members, Lucille Allen McAlister, these development groups will be formed throughout the Houston area and work on vocabulary, conceptualization, register, expansion, mind mapping, ASL vs. CASE, and other topics. We are seeking facilitators who can dedicate one night per month to working with colleagues and peers to enhance and hone their skills.
